Seung-Hyun Jeong, Bass
Seung-Hyun Jeong graduated from the College of Music at Seoul National University and went on to earn both the Diplom and Konzertexamen in Lied, Oratorio, and Opera at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
He won First Prize at the Joongang Music Competition and the Gwangju Vocal Competition, as well as Second Prize at the Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna. After making his operatic debut as a bass soloist at the Stuttgart State Opera, he has performed with some of the world’s most renowned conductors, including Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Christian Thielemann, Antonio Pappano, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Kent Nagano, Andrew Davis, Christoph Eschenbach, Gustavo Dudamel, and Jeffrey Tate.
His distinguished career has taken him to major opera houses and festivals worldwide, such as Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Bayreuth Festival, Salzburg Festival, Vienna State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Hamburg State Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Real in Madrid, Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, San Francisco Opera, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
In addition to his operatic engagements, he has appeared with leading orchestras such as the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg, the National Radio Orchestras of Barcelona and Madrid, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra.
His recordings with Deutsche Grammophon and Decca include Wagner’s Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung; Strauss’s Friedenstag; Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte; Braunfels’s Große Messe, Op. 37; among many others, released both on CD and DVD.
In recognition of his international achievements, he was awarded the honorary title of Kammersängerby the German government in 2011, the highest distinction for opera singers in Germany. He is currently Professor of Voice at the College of Music, Seoul National University.
